Week 4 -- States are Rolling By
This trip will be complete in two weeks. On a daily basis it doesn't feel like there's much progress but when you look at where the trip started and where we are now, it's been 1,558 miles. During the past four days we left Ohio behind; passed through Pennsylvania; and have been in New York for three days. The route rolled into Niagara Falls yesterday, so that in two weeks we'll be in Bar Harbor.
The weather has generally cooperated most recently during riding hours. The last weather excitement was the day we ended in Bowling Green, Ohio as there were tornado warnings issued after all riders were in.
There have been days of urban riding as we've been in and around Cleveland and Buffalo for most of the week. These miles can be challenging with traffic, lots of stopping and general navigation issues. It provides, though,
lots of variety and interesting things to look at as we've remained along Lake Erie. Homes can be modest but many are large and magnificent. We've noticed the azaleas in full bloom, which seems late, but yet hostas are blooming.
Geneva-On-The-Lake was a highlight stop during the past four days. It was a touristy area along Lake Erie. Overnight was at The Lodge at Geneva-On-The-Lake, a gorgeous property.
Routes are starting to see more hills, which will be a prelude for the next two weeks.
Wednesday's route from Hamburg to Niagara Falls was interesting and pleasant riding through Buffalo. We crossed into Canada at the Peace Bridge in Buffalo, crossing as a group with an escort by the bridge authority. Traffic is stopped while riders cross. Once on the Canadian side, riders proceed through customs, again as a group which makes the process efficient. Riders rode through Ontario then re-entered the US at the Rainbow Bridge at Niagara Falls, crossing in smaller groups or as individuals.
Fortunately, today is a rest day as there's been a steady rain since early this morning. Rest days are for the riders to use as they choose. Some riders are touring the Niagara Falls area today. I spent the morning doing normal rest day chores including laundry, trip to the post office and picking up a few items that will be needed before Bar Harbor.
We leave Niagara Falls Friday morning. The next stretch will be 8 riding days, the longest stretch of riding since having left Fargo. This is a bit of concern for the group as it includes a few high mileage days, along with climbing. They just need to keep in mind that they are stronger than when we left Fargo. If everyone takes care of themselves, they'll finish without a problem.
